When a hole in the heart needs to be closed, everyone normally opens the front of the chest to get to the heart. Over the last 10 years we have moved on to closing most of these holes without surgery. Those that cannot be done in the cath lab get a Thoracotomy incision which is cosmetically more acceptable.
